Antwerp diamond workers down tools
A strike has hit the Antwerp World Diamond Centre.
Blue collar workers are protesting against management cost cutting measures that were not discussed with the workforce.
Following in from costs cuts in white collar workers, blue collar workers are now also affected by the cuts.
Earlier 44 white collar workers were sacked. Now the jobs of four blue collar workers are being axed.
A spokesman for the Socialist Union explained the reasons for the strike: "Blue collar workers have already been affected by the cuts and have made their contribution. They were forced to sign on temporarily and work half the week to cut costs. Now further cuts are being made, this time to our group insurance."
The Antwerp Diamond Centre employs 140 blue collar workers. When the sackings of white collar workers were announced the management indicated that no blue collar workers would have to leave the company.
