ANTWERP - Antwerp city council said Thursday it is to crack down on flourishing illegal practices in the city's high street businesses.

The city authorities are alarmed at the rise in illegal employment practices, black market sales and hygiene offences among shops and eateries.

The council said it was launching a coordinated offensive by different administrative inspection services to bring to court serious offenders and close down their businesses.

Antwerp has seen a boom in the number of night-time grocery stores, telephone shops cheap clothes outlets and snack bars in recent years and the council said it believed many were involved in illegal cash transactions.
