BRUSSELS — Football club RSC Anderlecht has sacked players Marius Mitu and Laurent Delorge based on suspicions they were involved in the current match-fixing scandal.
Anderlecht took its action in response to media reports alleging that both players had confessed to police they had rigged matches while playing for SK Lierse last year.
Club management at Anderlecht subsequently met with Mitu and Delorge on Friday and said that both players confirmed they had committed acts that were "incompatible with the ethics of the sport".
The club statement said the issue was of such a nature that Anderlecht's faith in the players was "irrevocably undermined". It decided to immediately end contractual relations with both men.
The sackings come a day after Lierse sacked players Cliff Mardulier and Laurent Fassotte and assistant trainer Patrick Deman. All three had allegedly 'sold' matches to the gambling mafia also.
