The world-renowned Trappist ale from the Abbey of Saint Sixtus in the West Flemish village of Westvleteren has proved a big success with beer-lovers in the United States.

The beer sold out in the first day that it went on sale in specialised beer outlet across the US.

15,000 packs containing six 33cl bottles of Westvleteren 12 and 2 glasses priced at 85 US Dollars (65 euro) were sold at 140 liquor stores in cities all over America.

Despite the high price of more than 10 euros per bottle, the beer sold like hot cakes. There were even queues outside some shops selling the beer.

All supplies of the beer were sold out within 24 hours. Meanwhile several packs of Westvleteren have appeared on internet auction sites.

Westvleteren 12 is an internationally renowned Trappist beer. It has been awarded prizes for “the best beer in the world” on several occasions. The American network ABC called the Westvleteren Trappist as “one of the world’s most elusive and praised beers.

The profits made by the sale of the beer will go towards renovation work at the Abbey of Saint Sixtus where the beer is brewed.
