American ambassadors say farewell to Belgium
Howard Gutman, Ivo Daalder and William Kennard invited some 100 American, Belgian and other guests on Independence Day, the 4th of July.
As the end of their mandate is coming nearer, they already said their goodbye.
Howard Gutman is the American ambassador to Belgium, concerned with the bilateral contacts. Ivo Daalder is the American ambassador to NATO while William Kennard represents the United States within the European Union.
A successor has been named only for Howard Gutman, as it was confirmed by the American authorities that Denise Bauer will take his place. She will be the first female ambassador to Belgium in more than 30 years, after Anne Cox Chambers (1977-1981).
None of the 3 present ambassadors used to be part of the professional diplomatic service. Gutman is a former lawyer, Daalder was a member of the National Security Council during Bill Clinton's rule while Kennard chaired the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) between 1997 and 2001.
Yesterday, the Americans celebrated Independence Day on the 4th of July. Howard Gutman's term in Brussels ends on 23 July.
