BRUSSELS – All staff working for bankrupt Belgian charter flight firm Sobelair are to be fired, the official receivers administering the company have announced.

The airline employs around 450 people.

The receivers believe a buyer could still be found for Sobelair. But they said they had to sack the workforce because, while talks are underway with three potential candidates, a takeover is not imminent and there is little chance of the company resuming flights in the immediate future.

On Wednesday, the company’s two biggest customers, Thomas Cook and Jetair tours, pulled out of deals with Sobelair.

Sobelair was declared bankrupt by the commercial court in Brussels on January 19. It was a one-time a subsidiary of Belgian’s former state airline Sabena, which itself went bankrupt in November 2001.
