Alderman suspected of bribery

18 October 2007, BRUSSELS -The examining judge in Dendermonde has found grounds to suspect finance alderman Leo Stevens from Mechelen of taking bribes. Stevens was released after questioning, as was an official working for the Mechelen local council. On Wednesday the police raided the town hall in connection with an investigation into malpractices surrounding the signal company Janssens located in Lokeren.

Stevens was released after questioning, as was an official working for the Mechelen local council. On Wednesday the police raided the town hall in connection with an investigation into malpractices surrounding the signal company Janssens located in Lokeren.

Janssens and two other companies reportedly reached price-fixing agreements and bribed officials.
