BRUSSELS — Abdallah Air Out was officially charged with the murder of Stacy Lemmens and the rape and murder of Nathalie Mahy on Monday.
The Liège step-sisters disappeared from a city street party on the night of 9 June in a case that has reawakened the horror of paedophile killer Marc Dutroux.
Ait Oud has been in police custody since mid-June when he turned himself in after police said they were looking for him in connection with the killings. He has denied any link to the crimes.
Besides new incriminating evidence of pollen and fabrics traces, a witness has also come forward, telling police he or she saw Ait Oud on 11 June at 5am, the time at which the girls' bodies were dumped in a storm water system.
The witness said Ait Oud behaved "strangely" and was wearing "creased clothing". Ait Oud admits he saw the witness, but claims he was returning from a night out with a friend. The friend has not corroborated the alibi.
Inquiries have also indicated the convicted sex-offender behaved strangely around other young girls and children between 10pm and midnight on 9 June. Ait Oud is alleged to have offered to go searching for turtles with the children.
He approached more and more children as the night wore on and seven people have said they saw Ait Oud on the night, but the suspect has denied seeing any of them.
DNA tests have not yielded any usable evidence due to the fact the girls spent almost 19 days in the water before their bodies were found.
