BELGIUM - Two severe accidents took place on the E17 motorway on Thursday morning.

One accident happened on Deinze and another in Nazareth in the direction of Antwerp. One person was killed and one seriously injured.

The first accident involved 4 lorries and a van. The van was crushed between the lorries, killing the driver, and seriously injuring another person. Traffic was completely blocked causing a serious backlog.

In the slow-moving traffic on the E17, another accident took place involving two lorries.

Traffic came to a complete standstill as the emergency services had to free one person stuck in the wreckage. The person freed has been taken to hospital.

Traffic is being led away from the motorway on alternative routes. The authorities are investigating the accidents.

One lorry driver involved in the first accident is being questioned. The man, a Polish lorry driver, ploughed into slow-going traffic in a construction zone on the motorway.
