AEX struggles to remain positive

21 August 2007, AMSTERDAM (dpa) - The main index on the Amsterdam stock exchange AEX on Tuesday struggled to remain positive with the index remaining between a low of 499.81 points and a high of 507.35 points throughout the morning.

AMSTERDAM (dpa) - The main index on the Amsterdam stock exchange AEX on Tuesday struggled to remain positive with the index remaining between a low of 499.81 points and a high of 507.35 points throughout the morning.

By 1.50 pm the index stood at 506.15 points, a 0.31 percent gain.

Steel producer Arcelor Mittal did well - up 3.94 percent - followed by producer of nutritional and pharmaceutical ingredients DSM (up 1.63 percent).

The share value of chip producer ASML and employment agency Randstad also gained 1.17 and 1.10 percent respectively.

However, companies with hedge-funds and private equity firms as major shareholders continued to lose on Tuesday.

The share value of distributor of electrical materials Hagemeyer and office equipment supplier Corporate Express dropped by 1.24 and 0.70 percent respectively.

Other companies to lose were food producer Unilever (down 1.01 percent) and electronics company Philips (down 0.32 percent).
