60 police guns go walkies
Sixty weapons have disappeared from the main police station in Mortsel in Antwerp Province.
The daily Gazet van Antwerpen reports that the disappearance of the arms was initially not noticed.
The police authorities had ordered the decommissioning of the weapons. It was only after one of the weapons was discovered during a raid on the home of a criminal in Ghent that it emerged that the whole collection of police arms had not been destroyed and that the weapons had disappeared from the police station.
The accidental nature of the discovery has raised eyebrows. Boechout Mayor Koen T'Sijen, who chairs the local police authority: "The case needs to be thoroughly investigated. The culprit must be identified."
Antwerp public prosecutors have asked the police services watchdog Committee P to investigate the matter. Prosecutor Paul Van Tigchelt: "Some 60 arms are involved. The arms were no longer in use and should have been destroyed. The arms used to belong to police officers but had been handed in as they were issued with replacements."
