31 people sentenced every day for hit-and-run offences
Hit-and-runs are on the increase. Courts are determined to hand out stricter punishments.
According to police statistics, 31 people are sentenced for hit-and-run accidents per day in Belgium. In 2008, 11,520 hit-and-run incidents were recorded, 3% more than the previous year.
In 90% of accidents, there was only damage to the main body of the car, but in 31 cases, the accident resulted in a fatality.
Hit-and-run offenders are now being punished more severely than before; any person found guilty of driving away after causing injury or even death to a victim could face up to four years in prison.
