BRUSSELS - Almost one Fleming in two wants Belgium to split, and two in three think that this will happen sooner or later. This emerged on Tuesday from a survey by Het Laatste Nieuws. Flemings are pleased that the Flemish parties are not giving in to demands from the francophones.

Leterme has the explicit support of 70 percent of the Flemings surveyed. Other candidates for prime minister, like Didier Reynders and Herman Van Rompuy, score less than 10 percent.

New Flemish Alliance N-VA leader Bart De Wever also enjoys a great deal of confidence. He is seen by the respondents as the best negotiator.
