BRUSSELS — The police have launched an investigation into a marriage registered at the Schaarbeek municipality between a young man and his 13-year-old fiancée, La Dernière Heure writes.

The exceptionally young bride had stated that she had lost her identity card. In her application she then gave a false date of birth in order to avoid questions from the municipal personnel.

Marriage at an age younger than 18 is illegal in Belgium, although exceptions are possible after review by the Youth Court on a case by case basis. The parents or legal guardians of the underage bride or groom must petition the court to do so.
