BRUSSELS — As violence in the flooded chaos of New Orleans escalated on Friday, the fate of 69 Belgians in the disaster-hit area remained unknown.
Of the 312 Belgians who were in the three US states hit by hurricane Katrina, some 117 still need to be contacted by the Belgian consulate in Atlanta.
The consulate said the 117 Belgians could not be contacted because they were away or the lines of communication were down.
In Louisiana, there were 69 Belgian nationals who could not be contacted, 35 in Alabama and 13 in Mississippi, newspaper 'Het Laatste Nieuws' reported.
The Belgian consul in New York has been sent to Houston, where the majority of people evacuated from New Orleans are being given shelter.
He will help provide assistance to any Belgians evacuated to Houston.
Belgian Foreign Minister Karel de Gucht has also offered Belgian aid to the US.
