BRUSSELS — A playground in Mechelen will be off limits from 10pm in future, the City Council has decided in response to resident complaints.
Residents have complained that loitering youths have been keeping them awake at night in recent weeks, newspaper 'Het Gazet van Antwerpen' reported.
Culture Alderman Frank Nobels, who also lives in the area, confirmed the problem to the Flemish newspaper.
He had tried to discuss the issue with the youths in recent days, but claims they were not willing to listen.
One of the youths is also alleged to have turned aggressive last weekend and almost threw a few punches.
For city Mayor Bart Somers, that signified it was time to intervene.
The city council then imposed a 10pm curfew on the park, giving police the power to intervene if problems persist.
Youths who breach the curfew can be fined EUR 100. Signs warning people about the curfew will be erected as soon as possible.
New gates will also be installed to close the playground off at night.
