Welcome to Hardboiled High: Deauville sees noir teen movie

DEAUVILLE, France, Sept 6 (AFP) - Two of Hollywood's favourite genres -- the high-school movie and the noir-detective tale -- collided and gave birth to a curious hybrid shown Tuesday at the Deauville Festival of American Film.

'Brick', the third film to be projected out of the 10-strong field vying for the top prize in this Normandy seaside resort, proudly flies its mutant colours under the direction of Rian Johnson, who also wrote its convoluted script.

It is played as a homage to the hard-boiled film noir movies of yore -- Dashiell Hammett-style stories such as "The Maltese Falcon" and other fare starring Humphrey Bogart in a trenchcoat.

But the action and rapid-fire dialogue of that classic period is transplanted to an LA high school, where cliques are as sharply defined as in the 1985 teen movie 'The Breakfast Club'.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt, best known for his over-the-top performance as a comic alien in the US television series 'Third Rock from the Sun', flicks a switch to become the deadpan hero of the piece, a tough and smart student outsider who has to crack a drug ring to find who killed his ex.

He and Johnson presented the film in Deauville's main theatre, and surprised the crowd by speaking passable French.

"It's a big honour to be here at the Deauville festival," Johnson said, earning warm applause.

"I share Mr Johnson's sentiments," Gordon-Levitte rejoined.

The director explained that he decided on the school backdrop as a way of modernising the noir genre, to get away from hats and trenchcoats.

"We wrestled with the question of 'How do you do the genre today?' This was the weird approach we decided on," he said in a separate interview in English.

He also said that another staple of Hollywood catalogues -- the western -- also inspired the film's visual approach, with the main characters framed by large empty spaces and frequent close-ups of eyes.

Although not aimed at mainstream audiences, 'Brick' has already won critical attention, notably at the US Sundance festival, where it picked up a prize for originality of vision.

The winner of the Deauville film festival is to be announced at the close of the 10-day event on Sunday.
