Depending on the country you are moving from, you may be well impressed or disappointed with standard Belgian healthcare. Many expatriates, however, appreciate the flexibility of being able to choose your own doctor or specialist.
The way the system works is: every resident in Belgium joins one of the sickness funds or mutualités/mutualiteiten. Contributions are automatically deducted from your salary and you can join whichever fund you want.
When you receive treatment you pay the doctor and receive a form that can then be presented to the mutualité for partial reimbursement.
Doctors' fees may vary, but the reimbursement is regulated and stays the same for any particular service.
