BRUSSELS - The condition of the 14-year-old boy, yesterday stabbed at a school in Ghent, is still critical but stable. This was reported by the Ghent public prosecutor’s office this morning, but no new information was available regarding the suspects, the motive or the circumstances around the stabbing.

The prosecutor’s office is giving no details about the questioning of the 15 year-old suspect, a fellow pupil at the secondary school ‘Vrij Instituut voor Secundair Onderwijs’. “The boy was questioned until late in the night, but nothing has come to light about a motive,”says spokeswoman Annemie Serlippens. “I cannot give any new information about the search for the weapon or a possible second suspect yet.” Neither would the spokeswoman say whether the suspect had confessed to the crime.

The victim was stabbed in the neck with a knife or other sharp weapon. He was taken to the University of Ghent teaching hospital in critical condition, but had not been operated on last night, reported the hospital.

The police are looking for a second perpetrator, the brother of the first suspect who is also underage. These are two boys of Russian origin from Merelbeke. In the interests of the investigation, the prosecutor’s office will neither confirm nor deny that they are searching for the brother. They are looking for possible witnesses to the stabbing, which occurred around 4.00 p.m. in the Willem Tellstraat.
