BRUSSELS – The court had imposed a fine of EUR 245 on a fireman from Nieuwrode for running a red light. The man appealed the decision, but the appeal court has upheld the ruling. The man will only have to actually pay EUR 50.
The fireman was taken to court for running a red light in Leuven. The man went through the intersection at 51 km/h and was caught by a traffic camera. The law states that priority vehicles must stop at a red light and only drive through if the traffic situation allows.
The fireman says that the court is sending out the wrong signal with this ruling. He says it is giving the letter of the law priority above saving human lives.
