Theatre on Sea has plans to go afloat 03/08/2007 00:00

BRUSSELS – The Theatre on Sea festival will not be staying on shore much longer. "We really want to set out to sea," says the programme's coordinator Luc Muylaert.
"Our dream is to build a festival centre on the sea by 2009. The peninsula will presumably extend from the coast in front of the Venetian Galleries [in Ostend]," Muylaert explains. The ambitious plans come with a price tag. "Thanks to the financial and logistical support from sponsors we will be able to realise the project," he says.
One sponsor who could play a leading role is dredging and hydraulic engineering company DEME, which is involved in the expansion and renovation of the Ostend port and which is working on a windmill park on the open sea.
The Theatre on Sea's plans are born to a certain extent of necessity. The festival will have to move from its current location on the station square in Ostend to make way for a shopping centre to be built in 2009.
