Rotten meat also exported to Belgium 06/09/2006 00:00

BRUSSELS — Belgium is one of eight European countries where rotten meat is said to have been exported to from Germany.
In total, 90 ton is alleged to have been exported and another 50 ton of rotten meat was found at a cool storage last week.
The European Commission said it was informed on Friday night by the German government about the discovery of the meat, which had passed its use-by-date.
The 50 ton of meat was discovered found during a sanitary check in the German province of Bavaria. But it later emerged that 90 ton had already been exported.
The national governments of the eight European countries are now trying to locate the meat. It is believed the rotten meat was exported to Austria, Belgium the Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Italy, Luxembourg and the Netherlands.
Germany's Chancellor Angela Merkel has since demanded the introduction of one standard in all provinces.
And police have announced that one of the owners of the Munich firm — which allegedly exported the rotten meat — has committed suicide.
Meanwhile, despite the fact that earlier minor food scandals have emerged, the European Commission has said there are no gaps in European legislation.
It said the sector was primarily responsible for maintaining standards and inspections must be carried out by national governments.
The EC said the fact that the scandals are discovered is evidence that inspections work.
