Prison guards on strike 02/05/2007 00:00
2 May 2007
DENDERMONDE – The prison guards at the prison in Dendermonde went on strike this morning to protest overcrowding in the prison and personnel shortages. Management of the prison has confirmed this.
The guards are angry that promised extra staff has not been instated and that more prisoners than agreed continue to be held at the facility. They tried to step up the pressure on management to bring about the promised changes by working only Saturday shifts for the last week of April.
The unions had threatened to go on strike if their grievances were not resolved by 1 May.
Prison director Mentens understands the grievances but does not think the staff should have gone on strike.
All guards have gone on strike. Local police have taken over their duties.
