Online medicine purchases more difficult 03/08/2007 00:00

BRUSSELS – Buying medication over the internet will most likely become much more difficult. An order in council has been drawn up to impose restrictions on these internet sales, newspaper De Morgen reports.
In future anyone wishing to sell medication online will have to have a license. "This regulation will permit licensed pharmacies in Belgium to organise a website on which they can offer their medications for sale," says Ann Eeckhout of the Federal Agency for Medicines and Health Products.
Online sale will only be permitted for non-prescription medication. Any other offerings of medication online will be prohibited.
The regulation cannot be definitively implemented until the new government is in place.
China and India are the major producers of counterfeit medicines. The dosage of active ingredients in these counterfeit products often differs from the dosage in the original recipes, and can thus pose a danger to health.
