No lighters allowed from Ostend 04/10/2007 00:00
4 October 2007
OSTEND – Travellers leaving from Ostend airport may no longer carry cigarette lighters in their hand luggage. Passengers departing from Zaventem on the other hand are still allowed to carry lighters in their carry ons.
It is remarkable that Ostend is adopting stricter regulations, while Zaventem operates flights to so-called high risk areas like the US.
Ostend only offers flights to holiday destinations and the risk of attacks seems smaller.
The security service at Ostend airport says that the regulations are in accordance with a European directive that has been in effect for some time. The ban on lighters has also been in effect at Ostend for three years, but only recently did the airport step up checks.
Those who have a lighter in their hand baggage need not fear: valuable lighters are kept and returned to the passenger after the flight, others however are destroyed.
