"No fair trial for Van Themsche" 01/10/2007 00:00
1 October 2007
BRUSSELS – Van Themsche's lawyers say it is impossible for the young man to get a fair trial. The 19-year-old is accused of a racially motivated double murder and attempted murder.
The lawyers representing Van Themsche think their client has already been condemned by the media even before the hearings. They brought excerpts from magazines and newspapers to court to illustrate this.
The defence now wants the court to declare the criminal prosecution inadmissible. The court has withdrawn to chambers to discuss this procedural matter. An interim decision will come at 3.30 pm.
The lawyers held their plea before a jury of seven women and five men appointed at the beginning of the hearing.
Van Themsche himself spoke at one point to confirm his identity to the court. He came across as extremely timid.
