BRUSSELS - Benoît Lutgen, the Walloon minister for the environment is going to crack down on rude behaviour from 2008. Throwing cigarettes or papers on the ground will be punished, La Dernière Heure, La Capitale, La Meuse and La Nouvelle Gazette report on Wednesday.
The minister wants the fines paid on the spot. The bill still has to be approved by the Walloon Parliament. "Every study on economic investment in a region indicates that public tidiness is an advantage," Lutgen explains.
The violations must be punished on the spot. The fines will be between EUR 10 and EUR 50. There have been talks with the Union of cities and municipalities to set a standard rate.
