BRUSSELS – The number of first year students at medical faculties has dropped by about 15 percent. This emerged from a survey of Flemish universities by the Artsenkrant, the VRT reports.
Registration for first year medicine was down at all universities.
Professor Jan De Maeseneer of the University of Ghent is not surprised. "15 percent fewer students passed the entrance exams so it is logical that you have fewer medical students," De Maeseneer said.
At the same time the number of students in the biomedical sciences is rising. That is probably no coincidence. "The first year of biomedicine is something of a waiting room for those who want to study medicine but who failed the entrance exams."
