BRUSSELS – Flemish transport company De Lijn will require passengers on 13 routes to board at the front of the bus starting 14 May.
The bus company says this will increase the feeling of safety on its buses and will help reduce the number of violent incidents and fare dodgers.
Flemish Minister for Mobility Kathleen Van Brempt has said that international research shows that the number of fare dodgers is three times lower on buses where passengers are required to board at the front.
The trial project will be started on a number of regional lines in the provinces of Antwerp (lines 420, 421, 422, 423, 427 and 429), Limburg (line 29), Oost-Vlaanderen (lines 44, 46, 47), Vlaams-Brabant (line 355) and West-Vlaanderen (lines 50, 51).
Passengers with a pram or wheelchair will still be allowed to board via the back of the bus.
