BRUSSELS - Belgacom lowered its tariffs for phoning all mobile numbers as of Tuesday. The company says some rates have been lowered by "more than 20 percent," depending on the mobile operator one is calling.
As of Tuesday, phone calls to Proximis numbers cost 11.6 eurocent per minute during non-peak times, and 17.5 percent during peak times. The rates to a Mobistar number are 13.5 and 21.7 eurocent per minute respectively, and to Base numbers 16 and 24.5 eurocent per minute respectively.
The price cut comes in response to an action from telecommunications sector regulator BIPT, which had threatened to find Belgacom in default for failing to pass on the decrease in so-called "termination charges" to the consumer.
Termination charges are the costs that operators charge for calls that originate from another company's network. On 11 August last year the BIPT ordered mobile operators to gradually lower these rates.
