Asbestos fund to be launched 01/03/2007 00:00
01 March 2007
Until now, victims were only compensated if the inhalation of asbestos could be proven to be work related, Belgium's employment minister Peter Vanvelthoven pointed out in a press release.
Workers who were exposed to asbestos at work already benefit from compensation from the "work illnesses fund", a fund fed by the contributions of employers.
As of the first of April all Belgians suffering from mesothelioma will benefit from a monthly award of EUR 1,500. The spouse of the victim will also be awarded EUR 30,000 when her partner passes away. Dependent children will be given EUR 25,000.
These benefits are not exclusive and can be added to other benefits for the same affliction.
