Verhofstadt negotiates golden share 22/02/2008 00:00

Belgium will retain a veto when energy producer Suez merges with Gaz de France

The Belgian Premier Guy Verhofstadt (Flemish liberal) was in Paris yesterday for a meeting with President Sarkozy. The two leaders agreed that Belgium would retain a veto when energy producer Suez merges with Gaz de France.

As a result of the tie-up the new conglomerate will control much of the Belgian energy market.

Both Belgium and France, shareholders in the new company, will have a golden share.

The two leaders also agreed to consult each other on important energy issues.

Belgium is eager to see greater competition on the domestic energy market with more players competing against each other.
