Coach Vanderycken to stay in charge of Belgium's national football team the Red Devils
December 10 2007 - René Vandereycken is to stay on as the coach of Belgium's national football team the Red Devils. Vandereycken had come under fire recently after Belgium's poor performance in the Euro 2008 qualifiers. However, the Belgian FA decided stick with the Limburger at meeting held in Brussels on Saturday morning.
The Football Association has even said that it intends to extend René Vandereycken's contract and expects to make an announcement on the subject before 15 January 2008. (Belga) The FA's decision not to get rid of Vandereycken has surprised many commentators.
Relations between the coach and a number of FA officials are rather icy to say the least.
Recently, the Football Association's CEO Jean-Marie Philips even announced a list of possible replacements for Vanderycken.
He also has strained relations with much of the press.
Nevertheless, the Chairman of the Belgian FA François De Keersmaecker (photo) told journalists that "we would like to extend his contract beyond June 2008 with the 2010 World Cup in mind".
