Snow disrupts air and road traffic 26/03/2008 00:00
Heavy snowfall across the country has disrupted the flight schedule at Brussels Airport and affected traffic
Heavy snowfall across the country has disrupted the flight schedule at Brussels Airport and affected traffic both on the roads and on the rail network.
In Brussels residents woke up to gardens covered with a beautiful blanket of snow.
Snow is rare in Belgium only occurring a handful of days a year and this was the first time the snow actually managed to pile up.
Unfortunately for kids on their Easter break, the snow is melting fast, but this morning they were making the best of it hurling snowballs at passers-by in streets.
Not everybody loves the snow.
The adverse weather conditions disrupted the flight schedule at Brussels Airport with many flights being delayed.
The delays are due to the fact that ice and snow need to be removed from the aircraft.

There were also delays on the railways.
Rail infrastructure spokeswoman Sophie Van Haele told the VRT that snow had piled up on the points triggering delays of around a quarter of an hour.
The snow affected rail travel across the country but Limburg and the Kempen District bore the brunt of the disruption.
The situation is expected to ease in the course of the morning.
On the roads the situation was worst in the provinces of East Flanders and Flemish Brabant. Traffic on the Brussels orbital ring road was also disrupted.
Early this morning the police issued warnings to travellers making their way into the capital.
Road tunnels were particularly dangerous.
In Belgium as a whole the heaviest snowfall occurred in southern tracts in the provinces of Liège, Namur and Luxembourg.
