Cercle Brugge beat their local rivals Club Brugge by a single goal while Standard de Liège enjoyed a comfortable 2-0 home victory against Racing Genk.

The last two of this week's matches in the 2008 Belgian Football Cup were played on Monday evening. Cercle Brugge beat their local rivals Club Brugge by a single goal to gain a place in the quarter finals. Meanwhile, Standard de Liège enjoyed a comfortable 2-0 home victory against Racing Genk.

Club Brugge suffered a serious blow just before kick-off when Philippe Clement strained a muscle and was forced to drop out.

Cercle started strongly.

However, their Zimbabwean forward Gombami's effort hit the post after just one and a half minutes of play.

Stijn De Smet was also unable to score from the rebound. Club were happy to still be on level terms.

Club Brugge's first real chance came on 40 minutes.

Vermant set Djokic free in front of goal, but the Serb was unable to score.

Only excellent work from the Club Brugge goalkeeper Stijn Stijnen denied Cercle's Tom De Sutter.

Cercle went down to ten men just before half time when Serebrennikov was given his second yellow card of the evening.

Second half drama

The only goal of the game came three minutes into the second half when good work by Gombami provided all De Sutter all he needed to put Cercle one up.

Cercle had the best chances, but it was Club that put the ball into the back of the net. However, referee Jerome Nzolo disallowed Sterchele's effort for a fowl on the Cercle keeper Bram Verbist.

Cercle kept coming though and Gombami seemed to be on his way to putting them two up.

Stijnen stormed out of his goal and mowed down the Cercle striker.

The Club Brugge keeper was given his marching orders and it took several minutes to calm the players down enough to restart the match.

Cercle were good value for their win against the cup holders and local rivals Club Brugge.

Standard in the last eight

Two second half goals from Jovanovic and Mbokani (photo) were enough to see Standard trough to the quarter finals of the Belgian Cup against Racing Genk.

Standard were the better side throughout much of the match and deserved their victory.
