In a video statement, Mr Leterme said his period in hospital has changed his view on politics.

For the first time since his hospitalisation two weeks ago, Vice-premier Yves Leterme (Flemish Christian democrat) has addressed the nation. In a video statement, Mr Leterme said his period in hospital has changed his view on politics. “From now on, I want to do things differently”, he says.

Two weeks ago, Mr Leterme was rushed to Leuven University hospital's A&E at Gasthuisberg after suffering an intestinal haemorrhage. He was dismissed last Thursday.

“The past fortnight hasn’t been the easiest of times but I was fortunate to have a good substitute in the Wetstraat,” Mr Leterme says in his video diary.

In the video, Mr Leterme especially thanked all those that had supported him by sending him text messages, letters, cards, gifts and flowers.

“It really meant a lot to me”, Mr Leterme continues. “It shows that friendship is possible in a world where political battle and party politics prevail and difficult files are at stake. It gives me joy to see there still is a sense of solidarity when things go wrong.”

According to the vice-prime minister, his stay in hospital allowed him to think things over and put them into perspective.

“I think I’ll probably change my political ways now and allow more balance, wisdom and rest into my life”, Mr Leterme said. Still, he made haste to add that he would continue to work with the same passion and commitment as before.

Mr Leterme is expected to take up work tomorrow.
