According to a report there were 495 cases of euthanasia registered in Belgium last year
The number of registered cases of euthanasia in Belgium has risen by 15% during the past twelve months. According to a report in the dailies "Het Belang van Limburg" and "Gazet van Antwerpen" there were 495 cases of euthanasia registered in Belgium last year.
However, the real number of cases is believed to be double that
1% of deaths in Belgian are speeded up by euthanasia.
Around 1,000 people received help to end their lives last year.
The Chairman of the Euthanasia Commission Wim Distelmans has called for doctors to be obliged to report cases of euthanasia to his organisation.
Many more Flemings than Walloons opt for euthanasia. 412 of the 495 cases last year were in Flanders.
