NETHERLANDS - April Fools’ jokes seem to be thin on the ground so far this year. The only Dutch paper to spot one today is De Telegraaf, which describes the sudden expansion of Amsterdam.
In nearby towns such as Hoofddorp, Almere and Hilversum signs appeared welcoming motorists to the districts of "Amsterdam Hoofddorp", "Amsterdam Almere" and "Amsterdam Hilversum".
These towns needn't fear for their independence just yet though. The signs were the work of an organisation rejoicing in the name of the "Peanut Butter Collective".
With the help of a few student volunteers, they wanted to have a satirical dig at Amsterdam's plans to rope its neighbours into a single metropolitan area so that the Dutch capital can compete with larger cities abroad.
