Heavy downpour on Thursday evening left streets and houses flooded in parts of Flanders.

FLANDERS - Heavy rain on Thursday evening left streets and cellars under water at a number of locations across the region.

East Flanders and the south of Limburg province were especially badly hit by the cloudburst. The fire brigade in Aalst received no fewer than 60 calls to deal with flooding.

Dozens of houses in the centre of the East Flemish town were flooded. Sandbags were distributed to help residents protect their homes.

Elsewhere in East Flanders, streets were flooded in Aalter and Lede and a family had to be evacuated from their flood-damaged home in Zelzate.

Houses in several streets in the Ghent suburb of Ledeberg were under 15cm of water.

Several villages in the south of Limburg province were cut off as a result of a land slip. The landslip was caused by the heavy rain.

The fire brigade in south Limburg was called 30 times to deal with mudslides and flooding.
